What It Means for Families, Students, and the Future of Our Area
The Myrtle Beach area continues to grow and evolve, and with that growth comes exciting new opportunities for local families. One of the most unique educational developments on the horizon is the upcoming South Carolina Construction Academy, a new charter high school scheduled to open in August 2026.
Designed for students in grades 9 through 12, this innovative school will combine traditional academics with hands-on experience in the construction trades. For many families across Horry County, it represents a new pathway that blends education with practical career preparation and real-world skills.
A Different Approach to High School Education
The South Carolina Construction Academy will provide students with the same core academic requirements expected from public schools across the state. What sets it apart is its focus on career and technical education in the construction field, giving students the chance to develop skills in areas such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and eventually HVAC.
This approach offers students a practical way to explore career paths while still in high school. Instead of waiting until after graduation to discover their interests, students will have the opportunity to gain experience, confidence, and direction during their teenage years.
The school will be located at 1900 Mr. Joe White Avenue in Myrtle Beach, in a spacious building that once served as the Golf Academy of America. The large central area of the facility will be transformed into a construction lab designed specifically for hands-on learning and collaborative projects.
Learning by Doing
One of the defining features of the new academy will be its emphasis on real-world experience. Students will not only learn in classrooms but also participate in practical projects guided by career and technical education instructors and industry professionals.
Partnerships with local construction companies will allow students to gain exposure to real job sites and work alongside experienced professionals. This type of collaboration helps bridge the gap between education and employment, preparing students for future careers while strengthening connections within the community.
The school will also share its campus with Morning Star Academy, a new K-8 charter school focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. High school students will have opportunities to build projects that support younger students, such as garden boxes, greenhouses, and other functional structures. This collaboration adds another layer of purpose to the educational experience, connecting learning with service to the community.
Supporting Growth in a Fast-Growing Region
As the Myrtle Beach area continues to expand, the demand for skilled trades and construction professionals is increasing. A school focused on developing those skills locally supports both students and the broader economy. Families relocating to the area often look for strong educational options, and unique programs like this enhance the appeal of living in the Grand Strand.
Enrollment for the South Carolina Construction Academy is now open for the 2026–27 school year. Families interested in learning more can visit the school’s website or attend upcoming online information sessions to explore whether this new educational path is the right fit for their students.
